The Wiltern
The first couple of modern American folk, Grammy Award winners, and Oscar nominees Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, are back on tour with new music this year. This road trip includes an LA stop. They'll be taking over The Wiltern Theater on Friday, March 7th. Those deep voices and rough town lyrics are going to fill the entire theater with a vibe that would make Johnny Cash proud. Quite frankly, these two are the top performances in that dark country/folk genre these days. Fittingly, a near tragedy is what made them eager to continue producing music. They're bringing their new album, Woodland, on this tour.
Expect to hear a mix of recent songs paired with the couple's most popular tracks. The Wiltern isn't necessarily known for masterful country music performances. This Friday, March 7th, will be one of the few nights of the year when you can wear cowboy boots to this venue and not get dirty looks from the hipsters. Gillian Welch & David Rawlings put on a type of show that's hard to find these days. It's a darker tone of country music that's better enjoyed sippin' something strong. In your run-of-the-mill country experience, you're probably going to hear mostly upbeat tracks about love. Ladies sometimes love to trash on boys in their songs. With Gillian Welch & David Rawlings you're getting a ride toward the darker sides of life. This includes, though, deep, jazzy tunes that go beyond what you can hear at your local country bar on any given weekend. It's ironic that a near tragedy led the couple to produce and play even more music.
2020 turned out to be a rough year for Gillian Welch & David Rawlings. While the world was indoors, they had to scramble to save a ton of unreleased music after a tornado hit near their home studio in Nashville. The couple say that this experience led them to play and create more music than ever before. Some of the tones in their songs were a little "dark" to begin with, but now it seems they're going deeper down the rabbit hole. Woodland, their latest album, features these themes along with the banjo and guitar lines that have always been a staple of the couple. If you're looking for a more somber country music experience that's going to still provide an excuse to wear a cowboy hat on a Friday night, this concert's exactly what the doctor ordered.
The Wiltern will feature its regular seating arrangement for this concert. That means that this could be a concert that you'll enjoy just sitting down with a cold drink in hand and allowing the music to flow through you. Gillian Welch & David Rawlings are some of the few performers who still dive into the deep end of country music and aren't afraid to tackle rough stories through their music. Even though we're in Hollywood, you won't necessarily find an act like this taking a local stage any time soon. If you want to be a part of this experience, hit that get tickets button right now!
