Everclear has penned some of the most epic ‘90s hits, and they’re set to deliver these songs on the stage across major cities this fall. Since releasing their breakout hit, “Heroin Girl,” in 1995, the band has benchmarked their position as one of the most influential purveyors of rock music. This was the period when the subgenre called “alternative” became mainstream. And bands like Everclear paved the way for burgeoning rock acts in the 2000s.
For their setlist this 2023, frontman Art Alexakis is ready to dig deep into their catalog and present a plethora of tunes. “By mixing it up and digging into the catalogue, it still makes it fun and relevant for us, and I think for the fans as well. It’s still important to play the hits, but by playing those other songs as well, it makes it all seem more vibrant and real. Even though I recorded some of those songs 20 years ago, I haven’t played them in a long time, so it’s like reinventing the wheel. I’m having more fun now than I have in years. I think all of us are.”
Everclear was formed in 1991 by Alexakis. After recruiting band members the following year, the band moved on to release several commercially successful albums during the ‘90s. In 1995, the band’s sophomore effort, Sparkle and Fade, debuted on the Billboard 200, peaking at number 25. The album, which spawned the hits “Heroin Girl,” “Santa Monica,” and “Heartspark Dollarsign,” sold over one million copies in the U.S.
The band dropped their career-defining effort two years later, So Much for the Afterglow. The album delivered hits like “Everything to Everyone,” “I Will Buy You a New Life,” and “Father of Mine.” The song eventually sold over two million copies in the U.S., making it Everclear’s best-selling effort to date. In 1998, the band received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Instrumental for the track “El Distro de Melodica.” That same year, Everclear won the Billboard Music Award for Rock Band of the Year.
In 2000, Everclear came out with a loose concept album, Songs from an American Movie Vol/ One: Learning How to Smile. The album became their highest charting effort, peaking at number 9 on the Billboard 200. The record is the first of two-album series and features singles “Wonderful,” “AM Radio,” and Brown Eyed Girl.”
