LA LOM - The Los Angeles League of Musicians is an instrumental rock band consisting of Zac Sokolow on guitars, Jake Faulkner on bass, and Nicholas Baker on percussions. Experimenting with various genres and sonic elements, they're widely acclaimed for their fusion of multiple styles in their music. The Pitch praised their "unique pastiche of musical influences and styles," describing how their songs feel like a summer trip, heading to the beach. Definitely a breath of fresh air, these musicians have a knack for mix and matching tunes that go hard, A pride of Los Angeles, these men have stunned critics with a self-titled debut album made to elevate their live performances.
Zac Sokolow and Jake Faulkner first met in their teens, and later began performing covers of classic pop & soul tracks by the likes of Aretha Franklin and Roy Orbison at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Shortly after, Nicholas Baker joined the band, introducing congas - leading to LA LOM's signature higher-tempo Latin-inspired soundscapes. With cumbia and bolero genres in the mix, the band's music became more diverse, leading to widespread social media acclaim. Both their covers and originals started gaining millions of views, and they started playing more gigs around Los Angeles.
Rooted in LA, much of their original songs have titles that pay homage to locations within the city - such as Santee Alley and Figueroa Street. Embracing cumbia and soul, it's a unique twist to share a "nostalgic feeling" of the rockabilly and hillbilly music vibes of LA in the '50s and '60s.
"We actually recorded a lot of our record on Figueroa Street," Sokolow told KCRW about the album. "We usually come up with these instrumentals, the melodies first, and we start playing them sometimes even in front of people before they really have a name. And then we'll often think of what it reminds us of, which is often a place or street name in LA."
Sharing how the city means so much to the band, they instantly start missing LA once they head out on tour. A cultural melting pot where diversity of people, food, and music can be found, no city matches the vibe of LA - just like no other pack of musicians match the uniqueness of LA LOM.
