In 1993, Liz Phair released her debut album on Matador Records. It was constructed by Phair and legendary producer Brad Wood and went on to sell just under half a million copies worldwide. The album was so influential that Rolling Stone put it on their "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list, sitting very proudly at number 56.
The album's creation had a very rocky start. Initially, Liz released several of her songs independently on cassettes. One of those cassettes made its way to the owner of the Chicago indie label "Feel Good All Over," John Henderson, who was impressed by her work and contacted her for a demo. Henderson then brought in Brad Wood to work on making her songs into an album.
Unfortunately, Henderson and Phair split due to differences in the creative direction of the album's sound. Phair continued to work with Wood and eventually got signed to Matador Records, the label on which the album was released. It was so successful that it became Matador's most successful project during that time.
Phair's influence on the album was huge; after all, it was her baby, and she would even be instrumental in creating the artwork for the album, the cover of which features Liz topless in a photo booth.
The album's reception went off the charts and into the stratosphere; the honesty of her lyrics and lo-fi sound were a hit with fans and critics alike. It made several top lists from many big names in the industry, such as ranking 15 in Spin's 100 Greatest Albums, 1985–2005" and being included at 96 in VH1's Greatest Albums of All-Time.
It has been reissued twice for its 15th and 25th anniversary, and now fans will get to witness Phair perform the whole album in its entirety live. This is a rare treat indeed, and no lover of music will want to miss out on this incredible event. You, of course, cannot afford to either, so be sure to grab your tickets right here and now before it is too late.
