During the mid-'80s, Max and Iggor Cavalera joined forces to form what would be Brazil’s biggest heavy metal band. Sepultura was founded after the brothers were heavily inspired by Black Sabbath’s iconic album, Black Sabbath Vol. 4. The name Sepultura, which translates to “grave” in Portuguese, was inspired by the brothers’ love for Motorhead, who released the single, “Dancing on Your Grave.” Apart from older heavy metal classics, the Cavalera brothers also pulled influences from newer bands like Megadeth, Kreator, Slayer, and more. In 1985, the band released their debut EP, Bestial Devastation. The following year, they released their debut album, Morbid Visions. In 1996, Sepultura released their last album to feature Max as the frontman. The album debuted at number 27 on the Billboard 200 and entered the charts in 15 other countries.
The band dropped several staples throughout the ‘90s, including their breakthrough album Arise, which debuted on the Billboard 200 and several other countries. The follow-up album, Chaos A.D., soared to number 32 on the Billboard 200. It later sold over 500,000 copies in the U.S. and was certified gold.
In 1996, Max Cavalera left Sepultura, followed by Iggor Cavalera, who left the band in 2006. Together they founded the Cavalera Conspiracy and released their debut album, Infliktedm, in 2008. The duo dropped several more commercially successful records, including their latest effort, Psychosis, in 2017.
Earlier this year, the brothers announced that they would be re-recording Bestial Devastation and Morbid Visions. The album, set for release in summer, is their way of looking back. "As we get harder year after year, sometimes you've got to go back to where it all started! We re-recorded 'Bestial Devastation' and 'Morbid Visions' with the amazing sound of NOW, but with its raw and timeless spirit. The artwork reflects the times we're living in right now…. Apocalyptic as hell! We also have two new tracks with riffs from those days, remembered by heart," Max explained. Iggor added. "I always felt like the recordings of our earlier work didn't do justice to the way we performed the songs. So, this is a very special moment in our lives that we are very proud to show you real fans our true representation of the amazing records 'Bestial Devastation' and 'Morbid Visions' with an insane visual identity… Enjoy, and see you all in the pit."
