Pond was formed in 2008 with the idea for the group being to be able to get anyone to play anything they want in a collaborative musical project. Their first album “psychedelic mango” was psychedelic rock and pop and was released in 2009 which helped them find their sound.
In 2012 Pond toured the United States appearing at festivals such as South by Southwest. Also in 2012 pond was named “the hottest new band in the world” by NME magazine and they got to perform with some of their biggest idols such as Damo Suzuki. They then went on to release an album titled “the weather” released in 2017 this album was released to critical acclaim with many publications praising it as an evolution and maturation of the band sound and songwriting.
This album was followed by the release of two singles “The Weather” and “Paint Me Silver” which combined, have over 500 million views over multiple platforms. In 2020 they were nominated for Best Independent Rock album or EP for their work on Tasmania, their 2019 album. In 2014 Pond was nominated for Most Popular Act and Most Popular Live Act and won both of these awards. As of June 2024, they have released 10 studio albums and one live album.
The band consists of Nick Allbrook who is the lead vocalist, ‘Shiny’ Joe Ryan who dabbles in stings as well as vocals, Jay ‘Gum’ Watson who is mainly drums and vocals, Jamie Terry who works with the bass guitar and on the keys as well, James ‘Gin’ Ireland who is mainly on drums. They all play multiple rolls in the group with many of them joining in on vocals, drums and strings, but they always come together in harmony.
