An old report from The Guardian stated that, "in contrast to the gilded cage of privilege inhabited by Jay-Z and Kanye West, Yelawolf depicts everyday rural poverty with the evocative precision of a master storyteller". With an incredibly distinct style that ranges from American gothic to gore, the "richness and invention of his language" and the massive range of his style, which swings, "from beer-swilling rowdiness to a crawling, contemptuous sibilance". Yelawolf himself has said that he feels he represents "not the ideal American" but those Americans that he calls the core: "I love the grit of who we really are."
Michael Wayne Atha aka Yelawolf got his first real commercial success after signing a joint deal with Eminem's Shady Records, and released the albums, Radioactive in 2011, which hit number 27 on the Billboard 200, and followed it with, Love Story in 2015, which hit all the way up to number 3! Love Story contained the single "Till It's Gone," which gained a platinum certification.
